Sky Whale Concept by Simkaye Sky Whale Concept by Simkaye
This is an early concept for my sky whale design.
It seems inappropriate to call this a sketch, but I put little time or effort into it. I really just needed an excuse to play with my expensive new acrylics for the first time.

8.5" x 11" Blue, white, and brown acrylic paint on smooth Bristol paper.
No references.

I want to see more of these. They're sooooo cool! :D (If I ever find the time, I want to draw your lovely whale species :) )

Thank you!! I'm really glad you like them. They're still MAJOR works in progress, so I don't have many guidelines for their design yet. Except that each breed is loosely based off of a real whale species (this one was derived from humpbacks), they all have rounded sea cow tails, multiple fins, multiple eyes, and bio luminescent dots trailing down their bellies. And they're much larger than their sea whale counterparts.

Very cool! I like the texture and design! I don't know if you watch Doctor Who or not, but I feel like this creature could appropriately make an appearance on that show :)

Thank you! I do catch it on BBC America every now & then, but I struggle following the plot, I'm totally lost most of the time. hahah

lol, yeah, it's gotten kinda complicated lately XD But it's a fabulous show if you start from the beginning (or, at least, the beginning of the re-vamp in 2005 ;))

A couple irl friends have been suggesting it to me as well. I think it's still on Netflix, maybe this winter break I'll have time to get into it :D thanks for the tip, I'll probably pick up at the revamp

Gosh what an interesting looking creature! Fantastic job on the pose. He really does look like he's swimming through the sky and interesting anatomy. It almost looks realistic and I love how you've done the colouring to make the whale's skin look smooth. Fantastic idea hun .

Thank you! I think I was inspired originally by the Sea World commercials where the orcas are diving through the sky.

This is so incredibly amazing. I really want those to be real, and I love the way you painted the clouds o:
Also I really like the underbelly, though that sounds weird to say xD

The colors in this are just amazing! I love it. You've got the whale anatomy down pretty well, and I especially love the extra set of eyes and rounded flukes. I wonder what he eats... Perhaps he consumes flocks of small birds or swarms of insects in huge mouthfuls like the way whales of the sea gulp down small fish and krill?

Thank you so much! :D I'm really proud of that whale anatomy, considering I went only off memory; but then whales don't have a lot of joints and features like other animals.

Wow that's exactly what I was thinking; that they might eat swarms of insects (insects & other animals are larger in their world due to more oxygen and less gravity than earth) or maybe even flocks of "sky fish", which I'm still designing.

I really love the concept of this. It's amazing! The multiple fins give it a whimsical feel too it, along with the double sets of eyes. I like that you kept to a traditional coloring for the whale though. He's still a new species, but he's not completely "out there" to the point where he looks weird with vibrant colors xD I hope to see more of him!!

This is amazing!!! I love it! Both the work and the concept! There is a lot of detail in this, and the bumps on its surface make it really believable. I like the idea of it, it's a lot different from and more natural than the recurring concept of a ship that can sail through the air. A sky whale would move a lot more gracefully in my opinion.

I'm glad you approve of this more than the common "sky ship" themes that keep popping up. I'm still juggling ideas for how this behemoth defies gravity in its world. Extreme gracefulness is exactly how I envision their movements :D

Hahaha! Maybe... their large bellies are filled with some gas that is lighter than oxygen, and so they use that to buoy themselves up! And they can expand and contract the organ that contains that gas, so as to move up and down 8D And their 'fins' are used to interact with the air currents meow!
